Music Theory Lab.
The "why" behind the chord. mazdisocveer.cfd's applied theory program — interval recognition, chord-scale relationships, diatonic harmony, all in service of the songs you already love. No textbook crawls, no academic exercises on page 32.
Theory you'll actually use on the fretboard.
Most theory teaching is backwards: it starts with notation, runs through Roman numerals, and assumes the student will eventually connect the dots. mazdisocveer.cfd's approach starts with the sound. Hear it first, name it second, find it on the neck third. By the time you "learn" a concept you've already heard it in three songs you love.
This program is dense, applied, and will change how you hear music. It's also the track most students say was the biggest unlock of their playing life — because once you understand what you're hearing, you can play what you're hearing.
What's inside.
- Intervals, ear-first (weeks 1–2). Twelve intervals, built one pair at a time. Daily 10-minute drills. By week 2 you'll hear a minor 7th from across the room and know exactly what it is.
- Chord-quality recognition (weeks 2–4). Major, minor, dominant, dim, half-dim, augmented, maj7, m7, 7 — as sounds, as shapes, as functions. Real songs for context: "Norwegian Wood" for major, "Black Magic Woman" for m7.
- The diatonic chord chart, internalized (weeks 4–6). Major key, minor key, mode mixture. We pull apart five songs from different genres and you learn to hear the I, IV, V, vi without thinking.
- Chord-scale relationships (weeks 6–8). Why Dorian works over a minor chord. Why Mixolydian works over a 7. Why Lydian makes something sound like a movie soundtrack. Each session: one example from a recording you already know.
What this is NOT.
- This is not a conservatory prep course. If you need that, I can refer you to colleagues who specialize in theory-heavy programs.
- This is not a "sight-reading from day one" program. We'll read chords and tab fluently, but if you want standard notation fluency, plan to add it on the side.
- This is not a music-history course. We'll reference songs from 1960 onward, but I'm not your survey professor.
Who this is for.
- You've been playing for 2+ years and you want to understand what's happening, not just what to play.
- You're tired of memorizing shapes and want to start building your own.
- You're going to write your own songs someday and want to understand the rules before you break them.
- You want to be the player who can sit in with anyone, in any key, and figure out a song on the spot.
